Not sure how to get yourself motivated for summer? Booking a trip might just be the push you need! Research by Mindful Chef found that on average, Brits spend 33 hours and seven minutes whipping themselves into shape ahead of their summer holiday.

Of the 2000 Brits polled, seven in ten initiated their health kick with a view to losing weight, with people hoping to shed an average of 4.5 kilos.

In addition to walking, swimming and running their way to fitness, those polled said they went teetotal by preparing healthier meals and putting a temporary ban on takeaways. With the warmer weather curbing appetite and beach holidays imminent, around 60% of British holidaymakers follow a healthier diet during the summer months compared to the rest of the year. Around half eat more chilled foods such as salads, 22% limit their portion sizes and a fifth aim to lower their calorie intake.

Giles Humphries, co-founder of Mindful Chef, said: “Given the majority of us holiday in July and August, our sales data supports the research findings, suggesting that most of our customers kick start their healthy habits at this time of year as their holiday countdown begins.”

Mr. Motivator
The simple act of retrieving their summer clothes from the wardrobe inspires people to get in shape, according to 40% of those polled. Almost half admitted the hot weather prompts a fitness drive so they can wear more revealing outfits without feeling self-conscious. Peer pressure also plays a role, with 45% following the lead of friends and family who choose a healthier lifestyle prior to going on holiday.

It seems like these motivators had the desired effect, with 70% claiming that they reached their health and fitness goals in time for their holiday. This is despite the fact that 41% find it difficult to resist the lure of barbecues and the local beer garden!
